1. behind the times

Nghĩa đen: phía sau thời đại

Định nghĩa: lạc hậu

Ví dụ:

Of course grandpa doesn’t have a cell phone – he’s behind the times, as usual.

Sarah is a bit behind the times. Her clothes are quite old-fashioned.

We read newspapers so that we don’t fall behind the times.


2. big fish in a small pond

Nghĩa đen: cá lớn trong ao nhỏ (pond, n: ao, hồ)

Định nghĩa: người giỏi nhất trong một tổ chức hoặc nhóm nhỏ

Ví dụ:

As the manager of a local company, he enjoys being a big fish in a small pond.

Since she was so popular and well-known within the walls of her small high school, Jennifer was used to being a big fish in a small pond.

3. bite someone’s head off

Nghĩa đen: Cắn đứt đầu ai đó (bite off, v: cắt đứt)

Định nghĩa: nổi giận cực độ với một ai đó mà không có lí do

Ví dụ:

There’s no need to bite my head off. I was just asking a simple question.

What’s wrong with the boss today? I just tried to ask him a question, and he totally bit my head off!

I’m very sorry I lost my temper. I didn’t mean to bite your head off.

4. crack someone up

Nghĩa đen: Đập vỡ ai (crack, v: làm vỡ, làm nứt)

Định nghĩa: làm ai buồn cười “vỡ bụng”

Ví dụ:

I really cracked him up with that joke about the sailors.

She told stories that cracked me up and I swore to write them down so that you could enjoy them too.

5. give someone a piece of your mind

Định nghĩa: nói thẳng thắn với ai đó về việc họ đã làm sai

Ví dụ:

I’m going to give that girl a piece of my mind when I see her.

I’m going to give him a piece of my mind. He knows I cooked dinner for him and now he’s an hour late.

I’m going to give that mechanic a piece of my mind if the car’s not fixed properly this time.

6. got your back = have your back

Nghĩa đen: chống lưng cho bạn

Định nghĩa: thể hiện rằng sẽ chăm sóc, trông chừng, ủng hộ ai đó

Ví dụ:

You have some big obstacles to go through, but remember I’ve got your back.

I told my brother that I’ve always got his back, no matter what happens.

It’s been 3 months, go talk to your crush! You know we have your back, right?

7. have a bone to pick with someone

Định nghĩa: có vấn đề tranh chấp với ai

Ví dụ:

Jane, I’ve got a bone to pick with you. You said that you would keep my secret and now everybody in our class knows it. What happened?

She has a bone to pick with her teacher because she got an F in math.

8. have deep pockets

Nghĩa đen: có túi sâu, ví dày (pocket, n: túi quần, túi áo)

Định nghĩa: người giàu có

Ví dụ:

The politicians with the deepest pockets usually win the election.

You will need deep pockets to turn this shabby old building into an attractive store.

These companies have very deep pockets and don’t mind spending a lot of loot to get their projects off the ground.

9. live from hand to mouth

Nghĩa đen: tay làm hàm nhai

Định nghĩa: kiếm tiền vừa đủ sống, không có dư dả

Ví dụ:

My father earned very little and there were four kids, so we lived from hand to mouth.

I have a wife and two children and we live from hand to mouth on what I earn.

I had to live from hand to mouth during most of college, since I could only get part-time jobs that paid minimum wage.

10. spit it out

Nghĩa đen: nhổ cái gì ra (spit, v: phun, nhổ, khạc)

Định nghĩa: nói thẳng ra

Ví dụ:

Come on, spit it out, who told you about this?

What secret do you know about Thor? Hurry up and spit it out.
